Is Morocco Worth Visiting In Spring?

Spring is a fantastic time to visit Morocco for most people. It offers a rare opportunity to explore the country at it’s most vibrant, without the sweltering heat. Days are pleasantly warm and the nights are cool enough to sleep well without aircon.

It’s one of the only times of year where you can comfortably visit both the mountains and the Sahara Desert. That flexibility is harder to achieve in summer, when temperatures dictate almost everything you do, or winter when the mountains frequently get snow.

    Spring is especially well-suited to:

    • First time visitors who want to see a mix of cities, culture, and landscapes
    • Travellers who enjoy walking, hiking, and being outdoors
    • Anyone nervous about visiting Morocco during extreme heat

That said, spring isn’t perfect for everyone. It’s one of the most popular times to visit, particularly in April, so some areas do feel busier. If you’re hoping for empty medinas or rock bottom prices, winter or peak summer may suit you better.

It’s also not the warmest time of year on the coast, so if you’re after a beautiful beach holiday, late spring, early summer, or autumn might be better.

What Is The Weather Like In Spring?

Spring in Morocco runs from March through to May and is widely considered the most comfortable time of year weather-wise. You’ll generally experience warm, sunny days without the intense heat that dominates summer, alongside cooler evenings that make sleeping and sightseeing far more enjoyable.

The average temperature across the country is 24°C

Temperatures do vary depending on where you are in the country. Inland cities like Marrakech and Fes warm up quickly during the day, especially by May, but mornings and evenings remain pleasant. Coastal areas tend to stay cooler and breezier, while the mountains can still feel chilly, particularly at night.

Rainfall in spring is usually light and short lived. You might experience the occasional shower, especially earlier in the season, but it rarely disrupts travel plans.

Temperatures do tend to drop in the evenings and overnight. It makes sleeping conditions much more comfortable, but you may need a warmer layer if you’re going out in the evenings.

Which Month Is Best To Visit?

Spring is a time of great change in Morocco, and by the end of the season, the temperatures can soar. The best month to visit will depend on your personal travel plans and preferences. It is worth noting that April and May are considered peak season in Morocco.

      Morocco In March

March sits just outside peak season and is the quietest of the three months. Temperatures are comfortable for both exploring cities and hiking in the mountains. Evenings can still feel a bit chilly, but March is a great option if you want pleasant weather with slightly fewer crowds and lower accommodation demand.

      Morocco In April

April is the start of peak season in Morocco, and of course with that you can expect more crowds than in March. The weather is beautifully warm, the landscapes are still green, and there’s much less rainfall. This is a great time of year for visiting virtually anywhere in Morocco, from the Atlas Mountains to the Sahara Desert.

However, it is certainly busier and accommodation prices therefore rise to match the increased demand. If you plan on visiting Morocco in April, make sure to book as far ina advance as possible.

      Morocco In May

May is firmly within peak season, with longer days and warmer temperatures. This brings the same crowds and higher prices as in April. Inland cities such as Marrakech and Fes can start to feel hot, especially by the end of the month. Coastal areas and the mountains remain a little cooler, making it a great time of year to visit.

If you like warmer temperatures, but want to avoid the stifling summer heat, May is a great time to visit Morocco.

Where To Go In Spring (And Where To Skip)

The best part about visiting Morocco in Spring is that there aren’t really any bad places to go. The weather is warm and sunny, but not stiflingly hot. There is also very little rain. Ultimately, this makes great condittio0ns for sightseeing, hiking, and relaxing on the beach.

Here’s our top recommendations of where to visit in Morocco in Spring.

      Marrakech & Fes

Marrakech and Fes are two of our favourite places to explore in Morocco. We love exploring the vibrant medinas, and admiring the beautiful architecture.

Spring is one of the best time to visit both cities. The weather hasn’t reached its crazy summer highs, but the days are long and beautifully warm. You can wander the cities and explore all the major attractions much more comfortably.

Late Spring (mid-April and May) is one of the busiest times in these cities, but don’t let that put you off. The crowds add a vibrant and lively atmosphere rather than being unpleasant, though you may wish to visit some attractions earlier and book any accommodation and tours in advance.

      The Sahara Desert

Spring is the best time of year to visit the Sahara Desert. Daytime temperatures hover around 29-33°C, whilst nights drop to 17°C. This means its a great temperature ot go out and enjoy desert activities such as sand-boarding and ATV rides, but it’s still hot enough for you to know you’re in a desert.

Nights can get a little chilly, so make sure to bring layers, but the cooler temperatures make better sleeping conditions.

      Atlas Mountains

Spring is a great time to visit the Atlas Mountains. Winter snow begins to melt and trails reopen. The melting snow reveals beautiful green landscapes.

Spring is a great time of year for hiking before the temperatures get too hot.

      The Moroccan Coast

If you want a beautiful beach holiday, heading to the Moroccan coast in Spring is a great idea. Compared to the cities, the coast offers a calmer pace despite being peak season. Temperatures are better for sunbathing later in spring, and the sea may still be a bit chilly. However, if you want a nice balance between beach time and sightseeing, spring is a good time to visit.

      Where To Rethink

Whilst spring is a great time to visit inland cities such as Marrakech and Fes, it is worth noting that by mid-May temperatures can get pretty hot. They’re still very doable, but if your trip is heavily city focused and you struggle with heat, earlier in spring may be more comfortable.

Spring does mean increased crowds, so it is important to set your expectations accordingly. It pays to be a little flexible with timings and plan as far in advance as possible to secure bookings.

If you want a slower, quieter experience, spring may not be the best time for you.

How Crowded Is Morocco In Spring?

Spring is Morocco’s peak season, meaning it can get pretty busy. Warm, long days, filled with sunshine understandably attract more people. Coastal resorts can book out, especially later on in the season.

However, ‘busy’ in Morocco feels completely different to ‘busy’ in Europe.

Popular cities like Marrakech and Fes are lively rather than overwhelming. Spring crowds tend to blend into the vibrant energy of the medina. Some major attractions, such as Jardin Majorelle or Ben Youssef Madrasa can get a bit hectic, but it rarely feels unmanageable if you plan well.

Desert tours are especially popular in spring, so availability can be limited and prices higher than in winter. Booking ahead is essential if the Sahara is part of your plan.

One of the best ways to manage crowds is timing. Starting your days early, visiting major sights in the morning, and slowing down in the afternoons makes a big difference. Mixing popular destinations with quieter areas like the mountains or coast also helps balance out the busier spots.

Overall, spring crowds are a trade-off. You get excellent weather and access to the country at its best, in exchange for higher demand and a more energetic travel environment.

      Festivals And Events

Spring is an active period in Morocco, with a mix of cultural, religious, and local events taking place. While dates can change each year, especially for religious celebrations, spring often brings a lively atmosphere that adds to the experience rather than disrupting it.

One of the most important events that may fall in spring is Ramadan. For most people, we would advise against visiting Morocco during Ramadan. This is a deeply spiritual time, involving fasting during daylight hours. Food options may be more limited in the daytime, and opening hours of attractions and souks may be shorter.

However, after the sun sets, the cities feel especially atmospheric as families gather to break the fast. Visiting during Ramadan offers a completely different experience of Morocco, and a more authentic glimpse into Moroccan culture.

In April and May, you may also come across local music, food, and cultural festivals, particularly in larger cities and towns. These events can increase accommodation demand and prices in certain areas, but they also bring energy and colour, especially in the evenings.

If your travel dates overlap with festivals or public holidays, it’s worth booking accommodation and transport in advance. That said, there’s rarely a need to plan an entire trip around events unless there’s something specific you want to experience.

      What To Pack For Spring

Packing for Morocco in spring is all about layers. Temperatures are generally comfortable, but they can shift noticeably between day and night, and vary depending on where you are in the country.

We also recommend covering knees and shoulders whilst in Morocco as a sign of respect and to avoid unwanted attention. This is particularly important if you visit during Ramadan.

Here’s the basics we recommend bringing:

      • Lightweight, breathable tops
      • Loose trousers, skirts, or maxi dresses
      • A light jumper or cardigan for cooler evenings
      • Light rain jacket for spring showers
      • Comfortable shoes
      • Sunglasses
      • Sun cream (can be difficult to find in Morocco)
      • Filter water bottle (you cannot drink the tap water)
      • Type C travel adaptor (the same plug type as Europe)
