Where To Stay In Muscat: Best Areas & Hotels For Every Budget 2025

This guide will help you choose where to stay in Muscat, depending on your travel preferences and budget.

Muscat, the capital of Oman, is a fascinating place to explore. However, when you look at Muscat on a map, you might be surprised to see just how spread out this city is.

With mountains on one side and the sea on the other, the city has expanded along the coastline, with attractions pretty spread out. This makes choosing where to stay in Muscat quite difficult.

To ensure the best possible stay, it is important you choose the right area for you. In this guide, we have outlined all the possible areas for you to stay, why you should stay there, and the best hotels for each budget in each area.

In a hurry and don’t have time to read the whole post? Here’s a summary of the best places to stay in Muscat:

  • Mutrah – Best for sightseeing
  • Ruwi – Best for budget travel
  • Qurum Beach – Best for relaxation
  • Al Mouj – Best place to stay near the airport
  • Al Khuwair – Best place to stay for a central location
  • Al Ghubra – Best for city & beach lovers

Mutrah: Best Place To Stay For Sightseeing

Mutrah is the old town of Oman and was probably our favourite area. It is beautiful, located right on the seafront, with turtles swimming into the harbour. It is a super peaceful area.

Mutrah is the best place to stay in Muscat if you’re planning on doing lots of sightseeing. A lot of the main attractions in Muscat are located in Mutrah itself, including the corniche, the souq, and Mutrah fort.

This means you can spend less time getting between destinations and more time exploring. Mutrah is also a very family-friendly location, with wide paths, friendly locals, and several play parks for children to enjoy.

However, if you’re arriving late or have an early flight, Mutrah might not be the best place for you as it is the furthest place from the airport. It’s around a 25-minute drive from Mutrah, costing around 10 OMR for a taxi, or an hour bus ride.

Where To Stay In Mutrah

✅ Best Budget Option – Riyam Hotel

Riyam Hotel is the best budget stay in Mutrah. This hotel is quite simple, but the rooms are large and very comfortable. The highlight of this hotel has to be its swimming pool. Open for guest use only, it’s perfectly clean and offers a refreshing dip after a day of exploring.

Rooms come complete with a balcony offering amazing mountain, city or sea views. It’s a little set back, around a 15-minute walk from the Corniche, however that just makes the views even better.

It is worth noting that some guests find the WiFi to be poor, particularly on higher floors. However, this could be a great opportunity to reconnect without screens.

✅ Best Mid-Range Option – Fort Guesthouse

Fort Guesthouse is one of the best places to stay in Mutrah. Its location is fantastic, just a short 5-minute walk from the Corniche.

The rooms are traditional in style, and very comfortable. There are several suites you can stay in, with their own seating areas and kitchenettes.Head up to the rooftop for a fantastic café serving croissants and coffee, with incredible views over Mutrah.

The owners of this guesthouse are super friendly and always on hand to help, offer advice, or simply have a chat. If you’re driving in Oman, it also has its own private car park for guest use.

✅ Best Luxury Option – NASEEM Hotel

The location of Naseem Hotel could not be better for exploring Mutrah. It is just a few minutes walk from the corniche and the souq.

Ruwi: Best For Budget Travellers

Ruwi, just inland from Mutrah, is Muscat’s top spot for budget travellers, with easy access to the city’s main attractions and a direct bus to the airport. It has a lively local vibe with souqs, a small park, and excellent restaurants—earning it the nickname “Little India.” While activities may take a bit more effort to find, Ruwi rewards those who enjoy exploring off the beaten path. Accommodation ranges from budget options to a luxury 5-star hotel.
