Best Things To Do In Ljubljana

Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia and is likely where you will begin your adventure. This is one of the cleanest and friendliest cities we have ever visited, with a completely pedestrianised centre. Plus, as the capital city, there are so many fun things to do!

1. Wander The Picturesque Streets Of Ljubljana

Why aren’t more people talking about Ljubljana? It honestly blows our mind because this city is stunning. The architecture is insanely beautiful, with wide cobblestone streets, pastel-hued buildings and ornate facades.

One of the best ways to get to know the city is simply to wander aimlessly, taking in the charming streets. The Ljubljanica River forms a gentle curve through the city and is lined with cute cafés, boutiques, and colourful buildings. It feels like it’s been plucked straight from a fairytale.

2. Explore Ljubljana Castle

Ljubljana Castle is an iconic part of the city’s skyline. Perched on a tall hill in the centre of the city, this 11th Century castle is a must-visit.

Despite being almost 1000 years old, this castle is beautifully preserved. It has undergone many transformations since it was first built, and today it shows an important part of Slovenia’s history.

You can reach Ljubljana Castle by walking through the shaded tree-lined paths up the hill, or by taking the funicular which offers scenic city views.

Once you’re inside, you can explore the castle’s museums, medieval halls, and exhibitions at your own pace. Make sure you climb the castle tower for the most insane views over Ljubljana and the surrounding countryside. You might even be able to see the Julian Alps in the distance.

    3. See The Triple Bridge And Dragon Bridge

One of our favourite spots in Ljubljana was the Triple Bridge. I know what you’re thinking, it’s just a bridge.

    Except it’s not. It’s 3 bridges. Crazy, I know.

All jokes aside, the triple bridge really is incredibly beautiful. It’s located just off Prešeren Square, and yet retains a tranquil atmosphere. It connects the old town with the new, and is particularly beautiful when lit up at night.

No visit to Slovenia would be complete without seeing the famous Dragon Bridge, one of the most iconic places. Built in the 1900s, the bridge is guarded by four fierce dragons. These dragons are a symbol of the city, and are said to be the protectors of Ljubljana. Make sure you pop by to see it!

    4. Take A Ljubljanica River Boat Ride

For a completely different perspective of Ljubljana, one of the best things to do is to head on a boat ride on the beautiful Ljubljanica River.

These relaxing river cruises offer a view of Ljubljana like you’ll never have seen before. You’ll cruise past charming buildings, tree-lined embankments, and under the iconic triple bridge.

The gentle pace of the boat allows you to truly soak in the beauty around you—especially at golden hour when the buildings glow and the reflections shimmer on the water.

Most tours include a guide who’ll share stories about the city’s history and culture as you glide along.

It’s a peaceful, scenic, and surprisingly romantic way to explore Ljubljana, and a perfect break from all the walking.

    5. Relax In Tivoli Park

Tivoli Park is the largest park in Ljubljana and is the perfect place to relax for a few hours after exploring the bustling city. The park is filled with lush green grass, tree-lined paths, and landscaped gardens.

If you want a little culture, make sure to visit Tivoli Mansion, home to the International Centre of Graphic Arts and an outdoor art gallery.

The best place to visit in Tivoli Park is the beautiful boating lake. In the summer, it is covered in lily pads, which just adds to the romantic atmosphere.

    6. Visit The Farmers Market In Ljubljana

One of the best ways to experience the local culture of Slovenia is to visit the Ljubljana open air market. Nestled between the river and castle hill is the central market.

Open daily (apart from Sundays), this is where you can shop amongst the locals. You can pick up everything from fresh produce and flowers, to cheeses and honey.

Everything is locally sourced, and sold by farmers and artisans from all over Slovenia. It’s a great place to grab a snack or pick up a souvenir.

    7. Enjoy Coffee or a Drink at a Riverside Cafe in Ljubljana

One of my favourite things to do in Ljubljana is to watch the world go by with a coffee in my hand. The Ljubljanica River, stretching through the city, is lined by beautiful cafés with incredible views and an even better ambience.

Find a cute café to sit amongst the locals and watch as the day goes by.

    Best Day Trips From Ljubljana

Using Ljubljana as a base for your trip to Slovenia is an excellent option due to its central location. There are so many incredible day trips you can do from Ljubljana. The closest ones we’ve listed below.

    8. Visit Postojna Caves

Postojna Caves is one of the most visited cave systems in the world, open to tourists for over 140 years. Head inside to discover incredible karst rock formations, with some of the most spectacular stalagmites and stalactites in the world.

The cave is 24km deep, and is home to the rare olm, an aquatic salamander that thrives in the dark environment of the cave.

The tour of Postojna Cave lasts approximately 90 minutes. You can book a tour from Ljubljana that covers both Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle, making it a super convenient day trip.

    9. Explore Predjama Castle

We loved visiting Predjama Castle so much, it’s such a fascinating place. Just a 10-minute drive from Postojna Cave, Predjama Castle is the biggest cave castle in the world.

Built into a 123m high rock face, the castle dates back over 800 years, offering protection to Erazem Predjamskim, the knight-turned-robber who built the castle.

Take an audio tour around the castle and discover all the fascinating stories. Make sure to ring the wishing bell, and admire the beautiful green countryside around the castle.

    10. Go Bear Watching In The Forests Near Postojna

The Postojna area is home to one of the largest populations of brown bears in Europe. Approximately 1000 brown bears call this home, alongside lynx and wolves. This is super rare for Europe!

One of the best things to do in Slovenia is to book onto a bear watching tour. Your guide will take you to a secret hideout in the middle of the forest, where you will spend a few hours around sunset looking out for these beautiful creatures.

This is truly such an amazing experience and we recommend it to everyone visiting Slovenia.

    11. Explore Vintgar Gorge

Vintgar Gorge is one of the most accessible and beautiful river gorges in Slovenia. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country, so be sure to arrive early. Once there, you’ll be able to walk along boardwalks and clear paths through the gorge, with the powerful Radovna River flowing below.

The water is an insane shade of turquoise, and so clear you can see right to the bottom. There are several waterfalls and rapids along the way. The walk is only 1.6km (1 mile) making it really accessible for the whole family.

Best Things To Do In Lake Bled

One of the main reasons most people come to Slovenia is to see the iconic Lake Bled. This is possibly the most famous attraction in the country. We were a little worried it would be one of those places that didn’t quite live up to the hype, but spoiler alert: it’s even better than we could’ve imagined.

Lake Bled isn’t ‘just a lake’, however. There are SO many things to do around the lake that you could easily spend a few days here.

    12. Walk or Cycle Around Lake Bled

The first thing you should do when arriving in Lake Bled is to walk or cycle around the lake. It is only 6km around the lake, so should only take around 1hr30 to walk it. There is a flat, well-maintained path around the edge of the lake, with a boardwalk section taking you over the lake.

Walking around the lake offers incredible views over the church and castle. You can see the fish swimming in the insanely clear water, and ducks floating along the surface. It is a truly tranquil atmosphere.

    13. Visit Bled Castle

Visiting Bled Castle is one of the best things to do on Lake Bled. Standing tall upon a 130m cliff, this castle dates back over 1000 years. The views over Lake Bled are absolutely stunning.

The castle is home to a courtyard, a museum, a printing press, and so many other fun things.

You’ll find the staff wandering around in traditional clothing, with shows put on for families visiting in summer. You could easily spend a few hours exploring Bled Castle and everything it has to offer.

    14. Swim In Lake Bled

If you’re visiting Lake Bled in the summer, you have to go for a swim in the lake. It’s a rite of passage.

The lake is so incredibly clean, you can see the fish swimming around your feet. It’s the perfect way to cool off on a hot summer’s day.

Around the lake you’ll find designated swimming spots, with large grassy areas to lay a towel out and relax in the summer’s sun. It’s pure bliss.

    15. Hire A Rowing Boat

One of the most relaxing and fun things to do on Lake Bled is to hire a rowing boat. There are plenty of places around the lake where you can hire a boat. You can take it out anywhere on the lake, with up to 3 people per boat.

Boat hire costs around €15 per hour and is so worth it. Though do be prepared for a workout – it’s not as easy as it looks!

    16. Climb The Steps To Bled Church

Bled Church sits on an island in the centre of Lake Bled. There is a legend surrounding the church and the 99 steps that lead up to it. According to local myth, if a man carries his bride up all of the 99 steps, their marriage will be blessed.

To get to the Church, you can either row there yourself, or catch one of the traditional pletna boats. Make sure you stop at the bottom of the stairs to ring the wishing bell.

    17. Hike To The Lake Bled Viewpoint

One of the absolute best things to do in Slovenia is to hike to the Lake Bled Viewpoint. This is a little bit of a hidden gem, and one that a lot of people unfortunately miss. But you really need to see it.

The hike is short but pretty steep, and takes around 20 minutes to reach the top. You’ll wind up the side of a hill, through a peaceful forest, emerging into a clearing with the most spectacular views.

The perspective from here is incredible. You can see the mountains in the distance, Bled Castle, Bled Church, and the bright blue water. If there’s one thing you have to do in Slovenia, it’s this.

    18. Try the Original Bled Cake

Bled is famous for its traditional cream cake. It is essential a custard slice, but so much lighter and more delicate. Layers of custard and whipped cream are sandwiched with flaky puff pastry, topped with icing sugar. It is delicious. For the original Bled Cake, head to Kavarna Park.

    19. Stand Up Paddleboard at Lake Bled

If you’re up for a challenge, one of the best things to do at Lake Bled is to go paddleboarding. There are guides that will take you out on the water, provide all your gear, and teach you the basics of stand up paddleboarding.

It is so much fun to learn to stand up, and what an iconic place to do it in, surrounded by mountains with the most crystal clear blue water below.

Even if you’re a beginner, don’t worry. The guides are so helpful and supportive. Plus, it’s a real laugh and so much fun.

    20. Relax With A Massage

One of the best ways to unwind in Slovenia is by treating yourself to a relaxing massage at Ziva Wellness Centre. Located in a peaceful setting, this wellness haven has a calm and serene atmosphere, perfect for easing away any tension.

    21. Admire Peričnik Waterfall

One of the most beautiful waterfalls in Slovenia is Peričnik Falls. With a 52m continuous drop, this is one of the tallest and most breathtaking waterfalls in Slovenia.

Just over an hour’s drive from Ljubljana, Peričnik Falls is just a 5-10 minute uphill walk from the car park.

What really sets this waterfall apart, and makes it super unique, is that you can actually walk behind it. This is so much fun and the view from behind the waterfall is incredible. Just be aware, you will get wet!

    22. Visit Kranjska Gora

Kranjska Gora is a beautiful little alpine town in the heart of Triglav National Park. Whilst it is well-known as a ski destination in the winter, Kranjska Gora is incredibly beautiful during the summer months too.

The town is surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks and alpine meadows, with cobblestone streets winding through the valley. It is an incredibly friendly town, with a peaceful atmosphere. It’s definitely worth spending a few hours exploring, stopping for a coffee and a pastry while you’re at it.

    28. Relax Or Swim In Lake Bohinj

Needless to say, one of our favourite things to do in Lake Bohinj was to simply relax by the lake. The water is pretty chilly, but crystal clear, making for a beautiful swim. The best time to swim in the lake is the spring or summer, when the water is slightly warmer.

The lake is huge and there are plenty of spots around it to relax or swim. We recommend the east side of the lake, closest to the town, as there is plenty of space and the water is shallower at the edge.

    29. Hike To The Lake Bohinj Viewpoint

One thing you need to do when you’re at Lake Bohinj is to hike up to the viewpoint. This short hike winds through beautiful green countryside, through a little forest, and up to a clearing where you can see the entire lake.

    How To Get Around Slovenia

Slovenia is a super accessible country and is very easy to get around.

If you’re planning on staying for just a few days, or only want to visit major tourist attractions, there are great public transport links. Buses run regularly between Bled, Ljubljana, Maribor, and Piran. It is a cheap and reliable way to explore.

However, if you’re planning on exploring more remote destinations such as Triglav National Park, we would highly recommend a car. Car hire is relatively affordable in Slovenia and is widely available from Ljubljana airport and city. The roads are incredibly scenic and the drives are enjoyable.

This would be our recommend mode of transport for the majority of travellers.
