Visiting Lake Bled: Ultimate Travel Guide 2025

Lake Bled in Slovenia is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque lakes in the world. Dreamy turquoise waters, a tiny island topped with a fairytale church, and a medieval castle perched on a cliff – what more could you want?

Slovenia is one of our favourite countries. It is a country full of natural beauty. With over 60% of the country’s area being forest, there is no shortage of stunning landscapes. However, most people who visit Slovenia agree that Lake Bled is the most beautiful place in the whole country.

If you want to go on a scenic hike to stunning viewpoints or go for a relaxing swim in fresh water, you will not want to miss Lake Bled. Whether you want to visit for a few hours on a day trip from Ljubljana or spend several days exploring this natural wonder, we’ll cover everything you need to know before your trip.

Is Lake Bled Worth Visiting?

This is one of the easiest questions I have ever been asked. YES!!! Imagine water bluer than you have ever seen and scenic mountain views as a backdrop to a picturesque castle. What’s not to love?

Lake Bled is one of those places that no matter how many times you visit you will never get bored of. One, because there is so much to do around Lake Bled. Two, the view of the lake never gets old. Plus, there are some incredible and unique accommodation options. Therefore, we definitely think Lake Bled is worth visiting.

When To Visit Lake Bled

Lake Bled is a year-round destination; the only reason to visit during one season over another is personal preference. Each season offers its own unique charm, whether you want to enjoy the warmth of the summer sun or experience a snowy fairytale scene in winter.

Best Seasons to Visit

Spring is a great time to visit Lake Bled. The flowers have started to bloom, the lake’s trails are peaceful, and the weather is ideal for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and exploring the island. Spring is perfect for those wanting to enjoy the beauty of summer but don’t want to experience the summer crowds.

Summer is the peak season for visiting Lake Bled, but it is definitely for good reason. The lake is at its warmest, the atmosphere is lively, and everything is open. This is the perfect time of year for swimming, sunbathing, and taking a boat ride to Bled Island. Just be prepared for slightly higher prices and more tourists, especially in July and August.

As the summer crowds leave, the autumn bliss arrives. This is definitely when Lake Bled is at its quietest and most peaceful. However, it is not just the lack of crowds that makes Autumn a great time to visit. The surrounding forests turn golden, and the weather is still pleasant through September. If you’re into photography, this is one of the most stunning times to see Lake Bled.

Swimming in an icy lake might be the last thing you want to do in winter. However, there are still plenty of activities to enjoy around Lake Bled in winter.

During winter, Lake Bled is transformed into a real-life snow globe. The colder temperatures can cause the lake to partially freeze, and the snowy ice-capped mountains in the background turn Lake Bled into a winter wonderland. There are nearby ski resorts offering winter sports such as skiing and tobogganing. December is extra special if you love Christmas markets and cozy vibes. However, note that some attractions may have limited hours in the off-season.

Weather Overview

There is no bad time of year to visit Lake Bled, but the weather does vary greatly throughout the year. In summer, temperatures can reach between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius. This is a great time to top up your tan and enjoy a refreshing swim in the lake.

However, during the winter months, temperatures can plummet to -5 degrees Celsius. Therefore, make sure to pack extra layers while you enjoy the beautiful scenery.

As Lake Bled is located close to the Julian Alps, it means that temperatures can change quickly. We would always recommend packing extra layers and a thin raincoat just in case it starts raining (or snowing).

Events And Festivals

Lake Bled is a very lively and action-packed venue, with events happening throughout the year. One of the most popular events is the Bled Days & Bled Night Festival.

This is a summer festival that takes place on the penultimate Saturday of July and consists of traditional Slovenian folklore, mouthwatering local cuisine, and vibrant live music. You can also browse unique handmade crafts and soak up the festive atmosphere at various spots around the lake.

On one night during the festival, there is Bled Night, where over 10,000 lights in eggshells are placed on the lake’s surface. This 50-year-old tradition is a truly magical sight to witness.

If you want to watch some sports, then there are several events that you may enjoy. The International Rowing Regattas take place in spring and summer. The Bled Triathlon normally takes place at the beginning of September.

Some more unique events that take place around Lake Bled include Medieval Days at Bled Castle, which takes place in late spring. There is also the Golden Accordion Bled Competition in May and the Folk Music Hit Parade Bled in November.

Finally, during the most magical time of the year, the lake hosts the Bled Winter Fairytale, which is a month-long Christmas market. This event turns Lake Bled into a winter wonderland and will definitely get you into the Christmas spirit.

The highlight of this event is the “Legend of the Sunken Bell”, which takes place on the evening of Christmas Day. This is where some divers brave the icy waters to reenact the story of how the church bell sank in the lake.

    Ljubljana To Lake Bled

This 55-kilometer journey from Ljubljana to Lake Bled can be done in multiple ways, using public transport or driving.

Buses from Ljubljana Bus Station (Avtobusna postaja) to Lake Bled run frequently throughout the day. This journey takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes and drops you off at Bled’s main bus station. From there, it is just a short 3-minute walk from the lake.

Buses leave every 15-30 minutes during the day. This is one of the most convenient and budget-friendly options, with adult tickets costing €5.90 and children’s tickets being cheaper.

Top Tip – The first bus of the day leaves Ljubljana at 5:50 am, allowing you to enjoy Lake Bled without the crowds.

The train from Ljubljana to Lesce-Bled Station takes around 50 minutes, but note that the station is about 4 km from Lake Bled. From the train station, you will need to catch a local bus or taxi to reach the lake itself.

While scenic, this route is slightly less direct than the bus and can take longer as you may need to wait for a bus to arrive. Prices can be as low as €7.20 when you book in advance. The earliest train departs at 5 a.m., and the latest train is at 9 p.m.

There are multiple tours and day trips you can do from Ljubljana to Lake Bled. Each tour can offer something slightly different, but if you are short on time, we would recommend the Lake Bled and Bled Castle tour. This tour allows you to explore both the lake and castle with a knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide. However, note that the Bled Castle entry fee is not included in the price.

Driving from Ljubljana takes just 40-45 minutes via the A2 motorway. This is the quickest method, with the route offering great views of the countryside. Parking in Bled can be limited in the high season, so make sure you get there early or choose accommodation with on-site parking.

    Ljubljana Airport To Lake Bled

If you want to go directly to Lake Bled as soon as you land, then there are a few options you can choose from.

Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) is the closest international airport to Lake Bled, located just 35 km away. The fastest and most direct way is by taxi or pre-booked shuttle, taking around 30-40 minutes. If you have booked your Lake Bled accommodation, then check to see if they offer a transfer service.

There is no direct public bus from the airport to Bled, however, you can take a bus to Kranj or Ljubljana, then transfer to another bus to Bled. This route is cheaper but will take longer, around 2 hours in total, depending on connections.

If you’re flying into Ljubljana and planning on exploring more of Slovenia, which we would highly recommend doing, then picking up a rental car at the airport is a great option. The drive from the airport to Bled is short, straightforward, and extremely scenic.

We chose to hire a car in Slovenia – and it was brand new!!

    Public Transport Vs Car Rental

Public transport in Slovenia is very reliable and well-connected, especially between major destinations like Ljubljana and Bled. If you’re staying in Ljubljana and are planning a relaxed trip with no off-the-beaten-path detours, buses and trains are more than enough.

If you want some more freedom and flexibility, then renting a car gives you ultimate flexibility. Car rental is also great if you want to explore nearby spots like Lake Bohinj, Vintgar Gorge, or the Julian Alps. It is also a great option for families or groups, as it can work out more affordable.

However, be aware that parking in Bled (especially during summer) can be tricky and relatively expensive.

How Long To Spend At Lake Bled

How long to spend at Lake Bled will vary based on your interests and available time.

If you’re short on time, you can do a day trip from Ljubljana. This will allow you to have several hours to walk around the lake, visit Bled Castle, and take a pletna boat to the island.

This is great if you want to get a taste of what makes Bled so special. However, it may be a bit rushed, especially in peak season when crowds and queues are common.

If you have more time, we would recommend spending at least 2-3 days exploring Lake Bled. This extra time will allow you to explore at a more relaxed pace, hike to viewpoints, visit the nearby Vintgar Gorge, and go for a refreshing swim in the lake.

    Vintgar Gorge

It also means you’ll get to enjoy the lake during the quieter, more beautiful early mornings and evenings. This is when the tour groups are gone, and the light reflecting over the water is magical.

Want to really enjoy Lake Bled and the surrounding area? Then 4 or more days will allow you to use Lake Bled as a base to explore the nearby places. Whether you’re into outdoor sports or wellness or just want to unwind with incredible views, there’s no shortage of things to do

Best Things To Do In Lake Bled

Walk Or Cycle Around Lake Bled

No trip to Lake Bled would be complete without walking or cycling the perimeter of the lake. This will allow you to get incredible views from every corner, giving you a new perspective every few steps.

The 6km path around the lake is flat and very easy to follow, with a promenade detour allowing you to walk over the lake’s surface. We also saw some friendly ducks along this section. Make sure to also stop at one of the lakeside grass patches for a picnic.

The walk should last between 1-1.5 hours, depending on how often you stop to take in the stunning view.

If you want to cycle around Lake Bled, there are several companies you can rent from, with most located in Bled Town. There are a variety of bikes to choose from, including mountain bikes, eBikes, and children’s bikes, all at a very reasonable price.

    Hike To A Viewpoint

If you want the ultimate view of Lake Bled, then make sure to head up to one of the incredible viewpoints. There are three viewpoints to choose from: Mala Osojnica, Ojstrica, and Velika Osojnica viewpoints.

Ojstrica A shorter hike, about 20-30 minutes, from the trailhead. The trail starts behind the Zaka Campsite, on the left-hand side. It is 611 meters to the viewpoint, but most of it is a steep uphill climb.

It is steep in sections but manageable, with some wooden stairs to help on the way up. At the top, you’ll find a bench and the iconic panoramic view of the island, the castle, and the Julian Alps as a backdrop.

Mala Osojnica Want a bit more of a challenge? It will take about 30–45 minutes with steeper sections and metal railings to assist on trickier parts. The reward is an even higher viewpoint than Ojstrica, offering a wider angle and a slightly less crowded spot for that perfect photo.

The stairs to get to this viewpoint are very steep and can get slippery, so be careful. However, we found the view was well worth the effort.

Velika Osojnica If you want the ultimate view of Lake Bled, then this is the place for you. This is the highest of the three, and also our favourite. This trail continues past Mala Osojnica and gives a bird’s-eye view of the stunning landscape below.

The hike takes approximately 45–60 minutes but is worth the extra effort. It’s a bit more challenging, but it’s usually the quietest spot. You can always start the hike to Mala Osojnica, and if you want to challenge yourself, then continue to Velika Osojnica.

Top Tip – If you can, get to one of the viewpoints for sunrise or sunset for the golden light reflecting off the lake.

Rent A Boat To Bled Island

Getting a boat and paddling through the turquoise water is definitely something you need to do when visiting Lake Bled. This is one of the most romantic things you can do. There are two options to choose from:

There are a few different locations around the lake where you can rent wooden boats. These boats can fit up to 3 people, and you can hire them per the hour. Most rental companies are along the southern bank.

The price should be around €15-20 per hour. We recommend hiring the boat for two hours so you don’t feel rushed. This will give you enough time to explore Bled Island as well as enjoy a paddle across the lake.

Top Tip – Make sure you keep track of time, as if you go over, you may get charged for an additional hour.

If you would prefer to sit back and just enjoy the tranquil surroundings, then you can book a trip on a traditional pletna boat. These can fit up to 18 people and will cost around €15 per person for a round trip to the island.

The 20 to 25-minute journey is very peaceful, and Pletna Oarman will treat you to a smooth and relaxing ride. They will normally allow for around 40 minutes on the island to explore and take photos.

Top Tip – Note that boats will only leave when they are full, so you may have to wait for other people.

Ring The Wishing Bell On Bled Island

Once on Bled Island, you need to climb the 99 stone steps to reach the Church of the Assumption. Once you pay the €6 entrance fee (€1 for children), you can go inside,

where will find the famous wishing bell, which dates back to 1534. According to legend, if you ring the bell 3 times and make a wish, it may come true. The island itself is also home to a small museum and café.

    Visit Bled Castle

Perched on a cliff 130m high overlooking Lake Bled lies Bled Castle. Dating back to 1011, Bled Castle is the oldest castle in Slovenia. Inside, you can find a museum that provides a glimpse into the area’s history.

There’s also a wine cellar (where you can bottle your own wine), a blacksmith’s forge, and a café with jaw-dropping lake views. Tickets cost between €6 and €15 per person and give you access to the Castle Museum, the Chapel, and the upper and lower courtyards, which will give you incredible views of the lake.

Top Tip – You can either take the 10-20 minute steep walk up to the castle or get a shuttle bus to the castle entrance.

    Swim In Lake Bled

In the summer months, one of the best things to do in Lake Bled is to enjoy a nice relaxing swim. This was probably our favourite thing to do when we visited, as the fresh water allowed us to have a peaceful swim without getting saltwater in our eyes.

You can also head to the Grajska Plaža for changing rooms, a diving platform, waterslide, and sun loungers. Alternatively, you can just find a quiet corner along the path to take a dip.

Try The Famous Bled Cream Cake

You can’t come to Bled without trying the famous Bled cake. No matter what time of year you come, this creamy cake will leave your taste buds craving more. The most original, and possibly the best, version can be found at the Park Hotel, right on the lakefront. It’s the perfect treat after a hike or swim.

    Visit Vintgar Gorge

If you are staying a bit longer in Bled, then we would highly recommend visiting Vintgar Gorge. Located just 4 km away from Bled, this is a natural marvel with turquoise waters, cascading waterfalls, and wooden walkways that cling to the rock face.

The 1.6 km (1 mile) trail takes you through a narrow canyon carved by the Radovna River, ending at the stunning Šum Waterfall. It’s an easy walk, but make sure to wear grippy shoes and go early in the peak season to beat the crowds. The walk back to the start of the gorge also has incredible view of the surrounding countryside.

The entrance fee is €10 for adults and €5 for children. All information can be found at the official website

If you want a real adventure, then we would recommend renting eBikes and cycling to Vintgar Gorge from Lake Bled. This will give you a chance to explore the beautiful Slovenian countryside. Note that Vintgar Gorge is closed during the winter months (Late November to April).

Enjoy A Spa Or Wellness Experience

If you want to fully relax while visiting Lake Bled, then make sure to book a stay at one of the wellness centers. After a busy day of exploring, there is no better feeling than lying back and relaxing while other people pamper you.

Živa Wellness at the Rikli Balance Hotel is one of the top choices. Located on the edge of the lake, it offers stunning views, panoramic pools, saunas, and massage treatments.

Ride A Toboggan At Straza Bled

If you want a real adrenaline rush, then you have to try your hand at tobogganing. This family fun activity is bound to have everyone enjoying themselves.

The 520m slope winds its way down Straža Hill, where you can enjoy stunning views of Lake Bled. Reaching speeds of 40km/h, this is definitely one for the adventure seekers

Top Tip – The toboggan is only open in the summer months and is turned into a ski resort in the winter.

    Try Stand-Up Paddleboarding

If you want to try something new, then why not try your hand at Stand-Up Paddleboarding? On calm mornings, the lake turns into a mirror, making it perfect for a peaceful paddle.

You can rent boards by the hour and paddle out to the island, glide past the cliffs, or just float in the middle of the lake with the castle above you. It’s relaxing, beginner-friendly, and a fun way to see Lake Bled from a unique perspective.
