Visiting Slovenia In May: Weather, Things To Do, & Tips 2026

Thinking about visiting Slovenia in May? This post is for you.

Slovenia in May is truly something special. From the bright blue waters of Lake Bled to the wildflower meadows in the mountains, this is when Slovenia really shines.

Spring brings with it longer days, better weather, and fewer crowds than the peak summer months, making it a fantastic time for almost any type of traveller. In this guide, we will tell you everything you need to know before booking your trip.

Is Slovenia Worth Visiting In May?

We think May is a fantastic time to visit Slovenia. Winter in Slovenia can be harsh, and spring sees the country gradually defrosting. The snow melts away and wildflowers begin to bloom. By May, Spring is in full swing. Snow will be restricted to the high mountain peaks and the weather will become pleasantly warm.

Our favourite thing about May in Slovenia is the natural beauty. Slovenia is a beautiful country year-round, but spring is something else. The country is so green, the trees blossom, and the wildflower meadows are breathtakingly beautiful.

Plus, the crowds in May tend to be far fewer than in peak season, which starts around mid-June.

May is a great time to visit for hiking in the mountains, exploring cities, and scenic drives through the mountains. It’s not warm enough to take a dip in Lake Bled or enjoy the beaches at Piran (unless you’re brave!), but it is a lovely time to explore the natural beauty of the country.

Weather In Slovenia In May

The weather in Slovenia in May tends to be relatively warm and sunny, but of course depends on where you visit. Slovenia is a mountainous country, and at higher altitudes it can be pretty chilly still.

In Lake Bled, temperatures average around 19°C which is the perfect temperature to explore. Evenings get pretty chilly so you will want to pack layers. In comparison, Lake Bohinj, just a short drive away further into the mountains, sees average daytime temperatures of around 15°C.

Piran is the warmest place in Slovenia, reaching temperatures of up to 22°C which is lovely for a spring break. Ljubljana is just behind, reaching temperatures of around 21°C.

It is worth bearing in mind that throughout spring, temperatures gradually increase. The beginning of May will likely feel a bit chillier than the end of May.

Throughout May, the weather can be a little unpredictable, and rain showers are relatively common, with the country seeing around 10-14 rainy days throughout the month. It is important to pack a raincoat just in case, though the showers tend to be short-lived and shouldn’t disrupt your travel plans too much.

Things To Do In May

May is a fantastic time to explore Slovenia and there are no shortage of great places to visit and things to do. Where you go will likely depend on your interests and travel preferences, though it’s a great time to visit the attractions that get overrun with crowds in summer.

These are some of our favourite things to do in May.

Explore Lake Bled

The best place to visit in Slovenia in May has got to be Lake Bled. This is the most iconic place in Slovenia and truly feels like a fairytale. It has some of the bluest water we’ve ever seen, and the surrounding mountain landscape is breathtaking.

Lake Bled is also incredibly popular amongst tourists (for good reason). We think May is the best time to visit as there are far fewer crowds meaning you can experience this stunning place at its most tranquil.

Make sure to hire a pletna or rowboat to take you to Bled Island. Getting out on the lake, particularly in the warm spring sunshine, is one of the best things to do. We also recommend hiking up to the Lake Bled viewpoint. It’s a bit of a steep climb, but the views from the top are absolutely insane.

Admire The Wildflower Meadows

The best part about visiting Slovenia in May has to be the wildflowers. May is peak wildflower season in Slovenia. The Julian Alps are covered in stunning flowers, including white daffodils, crocuses and 40 different species of orchid. I love daffodils, they’re one of my favourite flowers, and seeing hundreds of them scattered across the mountain meadows is just spectacular.

Whilst you can see wildflowers across the country, the best place to go to see them is the Julian Alps, particularly Bohinj. Every year, Bohinj hosts the International Wildflower Festival towards the end of May. With wildflower exhibitions, information, and even special celebratory menus, the International Wildflower Festival is a great way to experience spring in Slovenia.

Embrace Coffee Culture In Ljubljana

There is a certain charm about Ljubljana. Despite being the capital of Slovenia, it has such a laidback atmosphere. Perhaps its due to the city centre being completely car-free, or perhaps it’s the beautiful architecture, or maybe it’s even due to the fact there’s virtually no tourists even in peak months.

Regardless, May is a great time to experience the charm of Ljubljana. Our favourite thing to do was sit by the river or along a cute side street, in the warm spring sunshine, cup of coffee in hand, people watching and embracing the slow life. Plus, if you do have a rainy day, it’s the perfect thing to do to shelter for a while!

If that’s not your sort of vibe, Ljubljana also has an amazing castle to explore, with stunning views over the city. Or, simply wander the cobblestoned streets, admiring the beautiful buildings and bridges. Ljubljana is the perfect place to slow down in May.

Explore Piran Beyond The Beaches

Whilst May is not the hottest month in Slovenia, Piran is a beautiful place to explore. Towards the end of the month, the weather is generally warm enough to laze on the beach with a good book, but it’s certainly not hot.

Instead, May makes a fantastic time to actually explore the historic town. You can climb the Old Town Walls for breathtaking views over the town and sea beyond, or hike up to St. George’s Church for an even better vantage point.

Visit Predjama Castle & Postojna Cave

Predjama Castle is the largest castle built into a cave in the world. It’s such a unique place, and it is particularly beautiful in May. The castle is surrounded by lush green countryside and has a small meadow right in front of it that is filled with white wildflowers in Spring. It’s stunning.

Not only that, but the cave under Predjama Castle opens in May every year, and it won’t have the peak summer crowds.

We recommend visiting Postojna Cave on the same day as Predjama Castle as they are very close together. Postojna Cave is the biggest cave in Europe that’s open to the public. You take a train ride and walking tour through the cave in order to see all the impressive stalagmite and stalactite formations. Postojna Cave gets very busy during the summer, so May is a great time to visit before the major crowds arrive.

Tip – Postojna Cave is very cold inside so make sure to bring a warm layer!

Both Predjama Castle and Postojna Cave are great to visit on a rainy spring day too!

Hike In The Triglav Mountains

May is the perfect time to hike in the Triglav Mountains. Many of the lower altitude trails that close over winter reopen, though deep snow persists on the higher trails. May is a great time to go hiking in Slovenia as the days are longer and generally sunny, and the temperatures are just perfect for hiking. And, as we mentioned earlier, the mountains are covered in stunning wildflowers. It’s just a win-win really.

Go Bear Watching

Did you know Slovenia is home to Brown Bears? Well, May is one of the best months to see them in the wild! Don’t worry, you’re highly unlikely to bump into any when hiking, but an organised bear watching tour is an incredible experience.

An expert local guide will take you deep into the forest where you can observe the bears from a safe wooden hide. The guide will be able to answer any questions you have, and tell you a little about the bears that you see. And a portion of your ticket goes directly towards the conservation of the Slovenian Brown Bear.

Tours start from the 15th May, just after the bears wake up from their winter hibernation and are off on the search for food.

What To Pack For Slovenia In Spring

As the weather in Slovenia in May can be pretty varied, it’s most important to pack a variety of layers and a waterproof coat. It can start to rain with little warning, and the evenings and mountains can be pretty chilly. Here’s the essentials for Slovenia in May:

  • Shorts
  • T-shirts
  • Warm Top
  • Long Trousers
  • Waterproof Coat
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat
  • Hiking Shoes
  • Day Bag
  • Reusable Water Bottle
  • Swimming Costume (if you’re brave!)
